St Patrick's Province

In Saint Patrick’s Province, our principal ministries are preaching missions and retreats, the care of parishes, and overseas missionary work (in southern Africa). Most of our houses also have a significant confessional apostolate. Among the other works in which members of our province are engaged are spiritual direction, hospital and university chaplaincy, communicating God’s Word through writing and other media, teaching theology and scripture, counselling, the support and pastoral care of refugees, and work for justice, peace and reconciliation.

The Passionists came to Ireland in 1856 and to Scotland in 1865; our English-speaking Mission in Paris was opened in 1863. Irish and Scottish Passionists have been in Botswana and South Africa since 1952. From the time the Passionists arrived in Ireland and Scotland, our main work has been preaching missions and retreats. Because of the shortage of priests in the mid-nineteenth century, we have also been engaged in parish ministry more or less from our earliest days in these islands. We have had the care of Saint Mungo’s Parish (Townhead, Glasgow) since 1865 and Holy Cross Parish (Ardoyne, Belfast) since 1868. For about one hundred years, Holy Cross, Ardoyne, was the only parish in Ireland in the care of a religious order or congregation.
